HOBOKEN FAMILY ALLIANCE NEWS: March 2004

Cabin Fever and Spring Fling Festivals are a Big Success!

Cabin Fever Festival has been cured... and just in time with all the winter weather we've been experiencing. The third annual event was a huge success with over $4500 raised from sponsors and raffle items. This money will go a long way for HFA's philanthropies.

The Elks Lodge hosted the event on February 27, 2005 with over 300 families in attendance. The room was full of energy as soon as the doors opened at 11am. As soon as you entered the room, you were greeted by either Katrina Dawson or Christine Sheedy with a list of fabulous prizes. Right away, you were able to pick up your new HFA directory and Get Out Hudson Guide from Peter Cunningham (husband to Jen Cunningham). He was ready to help you with all your HFA membership needs.

The Spring Craft Table, donated by the Sobolov and Lee families, may have been your next step. After that, perhaps it was a stop to the Hoboken's Chess Club table set up with boards. Even Mayor Roberts sat down for a quick game.

Just across the way kids were working up a sweat with Tiger Schulmann's Karate. After this stop, who new where to go to next? You could make paper flowers thanks to the Hoboken YMCA; Play street games sponsored by Council members Theresa Castellano and Michael Russo; Throw a bean bag for small gifts; Dig for a prize in a blizzard of snow, hosted by Colleen Castle Zajac; or sit quietly at Big Fun's table full of different board games.

A huge thank you goes out to DJ Tom Sweeney with tunes for everyone, donated by Mayor David Roberts and the City of Hoboken.

Right across the way there were balloon animals crafted by Sam Silver and Boo the Clown was set up to do some face painting! There were many princes, princesses, cats, and dogs running around the room. Around the corner was a quieter area where Anthony David's served up the best mac n cheese on this side of the Hudson!

Wendy & Ruthy from Romparoo provided all the balloons, always a favorite. We also thank Kaplan Cooperative Preschool for books that were donated by Scholastic. The books were then passed onto the Reach Out and Read program at the Jersey City Family Health Center.

The Hoboken Fire Department parked one of their fire trucks outside for the kids to look at and climb inside. They also provided fire hats for anyone who wanted one. What a treat.

The scheduled performances were fantastic! Silly Willy marveled the room with his awesome magic. Polka Dot the Clown dazzled the crowd with song and dance moves. Later, Lisa Orinn, Dave Lambert, Marci Applebaum and Erin Lee Kelly came in with Music Together songs and instruments to round out the day. A huge thank you to the Guitar Bar for donating the shaky eggs that the kids were able to take home. Marci and Erin Lee treated us to another great performance for the children. All the shows drew huge applause and appreciation from the audience.

The day wound down with a LONG list of over 60 raffle prizes. Congratulations to all the winners. If you haven't picked up your prize from Shana Lee, please contact her at 201-217-1385 to arrange for a pick-up time.
